Calling for the murder of protesters in Oregon

This is the new normal, I suppose. It should not be.

My local newspaper, Roseburg, Oregon’s The News-Review, chose to publish a letter to the editor that specifically called for the murder of protesters. The following was apparently in response to the entirely non-violent Women’s Marches:

How about we shoot a few of this year's crop -- say a dozen at each protest to see how many were bussed [sic] in, paid well. Of course, we will give all samples an absolutely free same-day burial at sea.

The letter was signed by Terry Stafford of Riddle, Oregon. Editors chose to publish the letter, then scrubbed it from the website.

You should read the letter. This is what we are up against. Even in blue Oregon, we have large areas populated by violent troglodytes. Our sheriff is one of the ones who promoted birther conspiracies, and advocated defiance of gun laws. I’ve been run off the road for my bumper stickers, and we have had vandalism at our Democratic Party headquarters.

We must not be afraid. But sometimes it’s hard; there are plenty of crazies, and there are even more people who apparently think that advocacy of murder is OK—including some at local newspapers.
